[texts]Feasibility of miniaturized instrumentation of the inflatable sphere for temperature, pressure and acceleration measurement - Luers, J. K
The feasibility of instrumenting the inflatable passive sphere (presently used to provide upper atmosphere density measurements) with miniaturized thermistors, pressure transducers, and accelerometers was analyzed. Data from the sensors must be transmitted by an onboard telemetry system to a ground receiving station. To assure a sufficiently slow fall velocity for the sphere the additional mass of the sensor and telemetry hardware must be less than 100 grams...

The results of research efforts to develop an optimized nickel cobalt coating suitable as a recording medium are outlined. The coating is to be used directly on a BeCu helical coil substrate of a helical coil NASA recorder. Specifically, efforts were made to: optimize the coating thickness; establish processes and techniques adaptable for the production of finalized plated helical coils; design and fabricate the equipment required for production and testing of the coils; and deliver finalized he...

[texts]THE EFFECT OF HYPODYMANIA AND HYPOKINESIS ON THE ARTERIAL TREE OF THE PELVIC MUSCLES OF THE RABBIT'S EXTREMITIES - SOKOLOV, N. Y
EFFECTS OF HYPODYNAMIC CONDITIONS ON THE ARTERIAL BED IN THE MUSCLES AND ADJACENT STRUCTURES OF PELVIC EXTREMITIES IN THE RABBIT WERE INVESTIGATED. ANATOMICAL METHODS OF INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT HYPODYNAMIC CONDITIONS PRODUCED MORPHOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATIONS IN INTRAORGANIC ARTERIAL SYSTEM IN THE MUSCLES, FASCIA AND ADIPOSE CELLULAR TISSUE OF THE IMMOBILIZED EXTREMITY. THESE CHANGES PROVED TO BE STABLE AND RETAINED DURING 6 MONTHS.

[texts]Solution of elliptic partial differential equations by fast Poisson solvers using a local relaxation factor. 1: One-step method - Chang, S. C
An algorithm for solving a large class of two- and three-dimensional nonseparable elliptic partial differential equations (PDE's) is developed and tested. It uses a modified D'Yakanov-Gunn iterative procedure in which the relaxation factor is grid-point dependent. It is easy to implement and applicable to a variety of boundary conditions. It is also computationally efficient, as indicated by the results of numerical comparisons with other established methods...

[texts]Water Treatment Systems Make a Big Splash - NON
In the 1960s, NASA's Manned Space Center (now known as Johnson Space Center) and the Garrett Corporation, Air Research Division, conducted a research program to develop a small, lightweight water purifier for the Apollo spacecraft that would require minimal power and would not need to be monitored around-the-clock by astronauts in orbit. The 9-ounce purifier, slightly larger than a cigarette pack and completely chlorine-free, dispensed silver ions into the spacecraft s water supply to successful...

To fulfill President George W. Bush's ''Vision for Space Exploration'' (2004) - successful human and robotic missions to and from other solar system bodies in order to explore their atmospheres and surfaces - the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) must reduce the trip time, cost, and vehicle weight so that the payload and scientific experiments' capabilities can be maximized. The new project described in this paper will generate thermal protection system (TPS) product that will...

[texts]Vertical resolution of temperature profiles obtained from remote radiation measurements - Conrath, B. J
The Backus-Gilbert theory, originally developed for analysis of inversion problems associated with the physics of the solid earth, was applied to the problem of the vertical sounding of the atmosphere by means of remote radiation measurements. An application was made to spectral intervals 2.8/cm wide in the 667/cm band CO2, and tradeoff curves are presented which quantitatively define the relationship between intrinsic vertical resolution and random error in temperature profile estimates...

[texts]Human Mars Mission: Launch Window from Earth Orbit - Young, Archi
The determination of orbital window characteristics is of major importance in the analysis of human interplanetary missions and systems. The orbital launch window characteristics are directly involved in the selection of mission trajectories, the development of orbit operational concepts, and the design of orbital launch systems. The orbital launch window problem arises because of the dynamic nature of the relative geometry between outgoing (departure) asymptote of the hyperbolic escape trajecto...

[texts]Large deployable antenna program. Phase 1: Technology assessment and mission architecture - Rogers, Craig A.
The program was initiated to investigate the availability of critical large deployable antenna technologies which would enable microwave remote sensing missions from geostationary orbits as required for Mission to Planet Earth. Program goals for the large antenna were: 40-meter diameter, offset-fed paraboloid, and surface precision of 0.1 mm rms. Phase 1 goals were: to review the state-of-the-art for large, precise, wide-scanning radiometers up to 60 GHz; to assess critical technologies necessar...

[image]Rogue Planetary Orbit for Fomalhaut b - NASA, ESA, and P. Kalas (University of California, Berkeley and SETI Institute)
This false-color composite image, taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, reveals the orbital motion of the planet Fomalhaut b. Based on these observations, astronomers calculated that the planet is in a 2,000-year-long, highly elliptical orbit. The planet will appear to cross a vast belt of debris around the star roughly 20 years from now. If the planet's orbit lies in the same plane with the belt, icy and rocky debris in the belt could crash into the planet's atmosphere and produce various phen...

The second stage of the launch vehicle ended prematurely due to low chamber pressure and terminated the mission. The launch was part of the U.S. International Geophysical Year program under the direction of the Office of Naval Research.
